Section 1 / 4

DON'T force a trade if:

  • You don't have spare money and you're still using money you need, like tuition, food money, or money for daily expenses.
  • You're still in debt, especially if you plan to trade to pay it off.
  • You're entering the market to get rich overnight or hoping to turn your finances around in a short time.
  • You don't have an income, savings, or an emergency fund for your personal needs yet.
  • You're trading with borrowed money or someone else's money.
  • You're not ready to lose the money you put into trading.
  • Every time you take a loss, you feel you have to jump back in right away to win the money back.
Section 2 / 4

Why should you avoid all of the above?

Example of a pump and then a dump (token GOY): ① All Time High 55.68K, ② now 6.17K, down about 89% from the top. GMGN screenshot (Oct 2026). Token is only an example, not a recommendation.

Degen trading is extremely risky. A memecoin can go up many times over in a short time, but it can also dump until it's almost worthless. You can even lose all the money you put into a single token.

Example of a dump (token DOTS): ① All Time High 140.41K, ② now 9.39K, down about 93% from the ATH in a short time. GMGN screenshot (Oct 2026). Token is only an example, not a recommendation.

If your personal finances aren't stable yet but you still force yourself into the memecoin market, the damage can spread everywhere. It's not just about the loss. It can also hurt your daily needs, add to your debt, cause stress, and push you into more and more impulsive decisions.
When you trade with money you actually need to live, every price move feels like a threat. As a result, you might:

  • Sell too early out of panic.
  • Hold a token that keeps falling because you don't want to accept the loss.
  • to win back the money you lost.

So when am I ready to go degen?

You can start thinking about degen trading when:

You also don't have to start with a lot of real money. Start with demo trading to learn how to read tokens, how to enter and exit, and how transaction fees work. After that, once you're ready, you can start with a small amount you can afford to lose.

Summary

Summary

Summary
  • Only go degen with spare money. The "DON'T force a trade" list above (money you need, debt, borrowed money, no emergency fund) is a guide to judge whether you're ready, not an absolute rule.
  • Degen trading is extremely risky: a memecoin can dump until it's almost worthless, and everything you put into one token can be lost.
  • Being ready to go degen doesn't mean being ready to profit. It means you're better prepared to handle the . Start with demo trading (lesson 1.2), then a small amount you can afford to lose.
Section 4 / 4

Common mistakes

  • Using money you need to live on or borrowed money, or trading to pay off debt.
  • Jumping straight back in after a loss to "win the money back" (revenge trading).
  • Starting with a lot of real money without practicing on demo first.

Remember: in the market, what we're after is the smallest possible risk. Don't let greed take the wheel.
Next up, lesson 1.2: How to Demo Trade.
